Ali Ayoub: Taking control of your career

“Prior to joining BGL I used to work in a gaming exchange store which I didn’t really find that fulfilling or challenging. I wanted to really look for something would give me the career progression and an opportunity opened up at BGL, so here I am and I love it. It’s completely different to what I have experienced before.  

"I joined BGL as a Customer Experience Representative, and at the same time I am working towards an Apprenticeship in Customer Services and Financial Services.  I had no prior knowledge of car insurance (I don’t drive) and so the first four months were quite challenging getting to grips with all things insurance related, but my peers have been great supporting me and helping me gain the knowledge I need to be able to do my job well. 

"I spend nearly a quarter of my week working towards my apprenticeship. It’s a 12-15 month programme and once that’s complete - who knows, I hope I’m still here but maybe in a different part of the Group. That’s the best thing that I’ve seen so far – there’s so many opportunities across the Group. It has a great development structure in place and you’re actively encouraged to grow and develop as an individual.”

We asked Ali for his top tips for anyone who is thinking about changing career or taking those first steps into BGL. Here’s what he had to say

“Don’t be afraid - three fairly simple words! I was dreading the thought of having to speak to a customer for the first time – however the fear soon went.  Within the first week of my training I was given the skills and knowledge I needed to be confident in dealing with customers – so no problems there!”
