BGL launches Apprenticeship with Makers Academy

Passionate about coding and want to switch careers?

Here at BGL we’re investing in the growth of our own talent through our new Junior Software Engineer roles. These are amazing apprenticeship opportunities to launch your career into software engineering.

Being a software engineer is about more than working with computers. It’s about solving problems. Often this requires a creative mindset and human collaboration that’s very hard to replicate in machines.

You will take part in an innovative scheme where you will have the opportunity to attend one of Europe's leading Web Developer bootcamps with Makers Academy and then start your career with one of the UK's leading digital distributors of insurance and household financial services.

At the core of the programme you will attend a 12 week bootcamp at the Makers Academy site in East London. Attending this elite coding academy will give you a fantastic foundation to coding required to achieve the Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship standard.

Develop your skills with BGL

After your 12 weeks with Makers Academy you will return to our Peterborough site to continue with the remainder of your apprenticeship programme. You’ll have the opportunity to work within a small agile team to develop first class software engineering solutions, whilst having access to a wide range of technologies to create a first class customer proposition.

Train to be a Software Engineer

We want you to succeed. Expectations are high, this apprenticeship programme has a strong focus on self-learning and we aim for everyone to achieve distinction. You will receive a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package from day one. Upon completion you will have the opportunity to progress into a Software Engineer role.

Our selection process

We want to find the best candidates we possibly can. This means we focus on inclusion and openness, and cast our net as wide as we can - if you’ve got dedication, resilience and a passion for a career in tech, we want to hear from you!

Although there are no specific entry qualifications, we do need to see your previous qualifications on your CV as some candidates may need to complete Maths and English functional skills assessments.

Makers Academy will be running the following selection process.

1. Your Application

A couple of questions about you & your experiences trying to learn to code and your motivations for joining BGL.

2. The Pre-work Material

You will then register with Makers Apprenticeships through the online portal. The application is complete by completing Codecademy Ruby. Once this has been done you will be asked to book in a phone call with Makers to discuss how you got on.

3. Coding challenge

The code challenge will test applicants on fundamental Ruby understanding and their problem solving processes. This is done asynchronously through a code review and observing their interactions through a help bot.

4. Interview with BGL

You will attend a competency based interview at our BGL offices and gain an insight into our culture and meet our senior engineers.
